The Cuddle Break I Didn't Know I Needed
Share
There are days when I have a long list of things to do.
Emails to answer.
Projects to finish.
Ideas to work on.
Deadlines to meet.
Like many people, I can become so focused on what needs to get done that I forget to pause.
Thankfully, Earl and Chamie don't.
No matter how busy I am, they always seem to know when it's time for a cuddle break.
Sometimes Earl gently places his paw on my leg before looking up, asking for an uppie. Other times he'll simply jump into my arms, purring before I've even finished picking him up. He'll settle onto my chest, lean into my kisses, and close his eyes as if nothing else in the world matters.
Chamie has his own way of reminding me.
He'll meow from another room until I answer. He'll jump onto my desk, rub his head against me, or stretch up with his paws asking to be picked up. The moment I hold him, he melts into me with loud purrs, face rubs, and the sweetest little head bops.
For those few minutes, everything else waits.
The emails.
The work.
The worries.
The to-do list.
They'll still be there.
But something important happens during those little interruptions.
I slow down.
My breathing becomes softer.
The tension in my shoulders eases.
I stop thinking about everything that hasn't been done and simply enjoy the warmth of a purring cat in my arms.
It's amazing how something that only lasts a minute or two can completely reset the rest of my day.
We often think productivity means working without stopping.
But maybe real productivity also means knowing when to rest.
When to smile.
When to laugh.
When to accept a hug from someone who loves you.
Animals don't seem to apologize for needing affection.
If they want to be close, they come over.
If they want a hug, they ask.
If they want to nap beside someone they love, they simply do it.
Maybe there's something we can learn from that.
The next time life feels overwhelming, don't forget to take a cuddle break.
Whether it's with your cat, your dog, or simply taking a quiet moment to breathe, giving yourself permission to pause isn't wasting time.
Sometimes it's exactly what you need to return with a calmer mind and a fuller heart.
My to-do list always waits patiently.
Earl and Chamie remind me that sometimes the most important thing on that list is spending a few quiet moments with the ones we love.
And somehow, after a hug, a purr, and a few head rubs, everything else feels a little more manageable.
Sometimes the best reset isn't another cup of coffee.
Sometimes...
it's a cuddle break. 🤍
