Because You Matter

Because You Matter

Inside a small hole
Down the mountainside, there lives
A wilted flower
Once with friends, now all alone
Torn apart by gusts of wind
A few months ago,
Beginning of a journey
Leaving behind home
Sisters and brothers, they go
A new life, one full of hopes
Thrilling every day
Wherever the wind took them
One by one they found
Landing on forever homes
And then there was only one
Still a long journey
Growing sadder and lonely
Have not found a place
Then one day, it hears a cry
Of help from a house below
And as if drawn in,
A wind lowers it inside
Through window it cries
“Please help me, I’m stuck in here
She doesn’t think I’m ready
“One night she found me
My tears masked by drops of rain
Felt loving Comfort
Wrapped my wings, healing began
I was devoted to her
“The days became weeks
Weeks became months, and I was
As sad as I was
After I sang a goodbye
Song, ready for departure
“One clear afternoon
Bright sun, clouds and gentle wind
Friendly butterflies
Saw others like me, but none
Were my mother, and I flew
“She saw and cried out
Asked why, begged for my return
Why do you leave me?
‘I need you,’ she said with tears.
‘You’re the only friend that I have’
“Saddened, I went back
Where I was once free in a
Big room, I was then
Locked up in a cage so small
Day after day like a thing
“Could not spread my wings
Cannot, it hurts, want and need
Out, to stretch them out
Want to fly, I want to be
Free, before I go crazy
“She opens the cage
Twice every day to feed me”
“That’s when we go out
I will help you distract her”
“How? She is very guarded”
So the time has come
And with a flap of his wings
It was up in air
It landed on her eyes, then
“It’s now! Go! Fly out” it said
And so he flew out
He flapped his wings once again
It was lifted and
Landed on his strong white wings
Her cries becoming distant
Air, wind are lighter,
Gentler, than when in the cage
Finally he's free
Free again, fresh, warm, and clean
Sun bathing them both
They flew high, through clouds
The sun rays warming the two
“Where will you go now?”
“Back home, where my mother is”
And so their venture goes on
Until a wind gust
Swept off the wing, it flew off
“Goodbye, see you soon”
To the next journey, it went
“Goodbye my friend, and thank you”
Days have become weeks
Weeks have then turned into months
Since their encounter
One day, a rumor has spread
About this lonely flower
Inside a small hole
Down the mountainside, there lives
A wilted flower
Once with friends, now all alone
Torn apart by gusts of wind
In a dark, cold hole
Behind a cold, heavy stream
In came a bird, a
Very familiar bird
“Hello, my friend” the bird knew
The wilted flower
Once a seedling that had helped
Has saddened the bird
Now is in pain, lots of pain
Loneliness and depression
“Had I only known
Sorry couldn’t come sooner
You are my true friend
Now it’s my turn to help you
You are getting out with me”
“To where? They hate me
Only a weed, not welcomed”
“Sorry that happened”
“I’m deeply rooted, it hurts”
“It’s not true, that’s why I’m here”
The bird picked it up
Turned around and flew away
This time with his friend
Clouds parted as they flew up
Rainbow shimmering in sky
“Where I live, there is
Luscious green, fountain of youth,
Flowers everywhere
Each and every one different
Bright colors, beautiful shapes”
Clouds again parted
Gliding down among sun rays
“And that’s where I live,
Oasis, you’re not alone
You are a flower to me
Because you matter.”
